Youth Icon of India- Vote for Shafi Quraishy

If things go alright and the heavens favor, Delhi based young contemporary artist Shafi Quraishy will be the Youth Icon of India (for Arts section) on 25th September 2009. Organized and instituted by the Wizcraft International Entertainment, this award is given in different sections including Bollywood, sports, media, social justice and entrepreneurship. The awards will be declared on 25th September 2009 in a gala function held at Gurgaon. While Bollywood heartthrobs Katrina Kaif, Hritik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar are in fray, from the Fine Arts category we have Shafi Quraishy.

Born in Kerala, Shafi had his formal education art from Trissur College and the he moved to Cholamandal Artists Village to pursue his career. He worked as an apprentice to several senior artists and assisted noted film maker and artist Paris Viswanathan in making his films. A few years back Shafi shifted his base to Delhi and participated in several group shows. Recently he was in ‘Connaught Place, Why not Place?’ residency program organized by Religare Arts Initiative, New Delhi. Shafi is all set to make his first international solo debut in Dubai in 2010.

Inspired by humanist philosophies and scientific knowledge, Shafi envisions a futuristic world of peace and co-existence in his works. Expressionistic in nature, Shafi employs color and textures to create an action oriented painterly surface. Last few years he has been working on the theme of Human Violence and War. His series on Guantanamo Bay has received critical acclaim. “Live and let live should be the philosophy of a completely evolved man. Violence does not have any place in an evolved world. We are still in the process. My paintings are pointers to such a fantastic world where science and spiritualism would merge through mutual understanding,” says Shafi.
